On the fifteenth day of the first lunar month, the lanterns glow brightly. The sound of drums echoes through the night air as sixty men gather together, holding aloft a 60-meter green dragon as they begin their procession from Pozu Temple in Ximen Community, Wanning City.
Year after year, the green dragon dance remains the most important Spring Festival tradition in Ximen Community.
Legend has it that many years ago, Wanning faced a severe drought, with dried-up wells and rivers, leaving the people without water. During this time of hardship, two giant dragons suddenly appeared, one green and one red, bringing a nourishing rain to the land.
Ever since, the two giant dragons have become the spiritual emblem of the people of Wanning. Every Spring Festival, the two dragons come together to Wancheng Town — the red dragon from Binwang Village, and the green dragon from Ximen Community.
